Reporting List of Measures 2019: Construction sites and equipment increasingly sustainable

Organizations are taking more and more measures to make the construction site and the equipment used there more sustainable. For example, the focus is on the in-house generation of electricity, the application of alternative fuels and the electrification of vehicles and equipment. This is evident from the Report of Measure List 2019, drawn up by SQ Consult, on behalf of SKAO.

The Measure List is part of the CO2 Performance Ladder. This sustainability instrument helps companies and organizations to reduce their CO2 emissions ambitiously and structurally, within their own operations, in projects and in the chain. Companies that are certified on the CO2 Performance Ladder indicate each year which reduction measures they are taking by completing the List of Measures. SKAO has an annual report drawn up on the basis of the completed List of Measures.


In a general sense, an increase can be seen in the number of CO2-reducing measures taken by organizations that work with the CO2 Performance Ladder. More measures are also being taken per organization, from 14.9 to 16.4 measures. The 945 organizations that completed the List of Measures in 2019 jointly apply 15,469 CO2-reducing measures in that year. An increase of 17.8% compared to 2018, where 880 organizations together applied 13,131 measures. In previous yoears, an increase was also seen.


Electrification of mobile equipment

Almost 10% of the companies that use equipment for the construction site (cranes, excavators, etc.) now have at least one hybrid or full electric machine on the construction site. About twenty companies already have several full electric machines running on the construction site. The use of these machines is expected to increase sharply in the coming years. An important point for attention is the availability of electrical alternatives for heavier equipment in particular. The number of companies (250) in total taking measures to use electric hand tools tripled compared to 2018. Other examples can be cited in the field of electrification and sustainability. For example, the report shows a doubling in the number of organizations of which some of the trucks run entirely on alternative fuels or are full-electric: from 15 to 30. The number of companies that indicate that they partially refuel with biofuel is growing strongly: from 9 to 25 organizations.

The fleets are also not skipped when it comes to sustainability. At 165 organizations (21%), part of the fleet runs on alternative fuels or is full-electric. This number is increasing: from 112 in 2018 to 165 in 2019.


Award advantage in tenders

An important reason for organizations to get started with the CO2 Performance Ladder is the advantage that they enjoy it in various tenders. More than 150 clients now use the CO2 Performance Ladder in their tenders, such as Rijkswaterstaat, Prorail and various water boards, provinces and municipalities. Companies that are certified on the CO2 Performance Ladder enjoy a fictitious award advantage in these tenders and therefore have a greater chance of winning the tender.
